In 2008 The New York Times commented, "So far, San Diego remains a fertile breeding ground for entrepreneurs, despite the problems in the broader economy.  That is due in large part to a non-profit organization, CONNECT, that was created 23 years ago to bring together people knowledgeable about business and investment capital with researchers at the universities and research institutes in San Diego."

There are now 25 organizations around the world modeled on CONNECT and the UK has dedicated 1 billion (need symbol for pounds)to reform its innovation system based on the CONNECT model.

The CONNECT team organizes 300 programs and events each year that engage 10,000 professionals and 1,200 volunteers.  Areas of special focus include:  stem cells, wireless-life sciences convergence, cyber, robotics, clean technology and sport innovation.
